Could a Common Asthma Drug Curb Drinking?

A medication designed to treat asthma showed no benefit over fake pills in helping most people reduce alcohol consumption. However, UCLA scientists found it helped women drink less during a recent clinical trial. Researchers gave 102 adults with serious drinking problems either ibudilast or a placebo twice daily for three months. Results published in JAMA Network Open revealed the respiratory drug worked no better than dummy pills for the full group. Still, women taking the real medication saw greater decreases in daily alcohol intake. Lara Ray, a UCLA psychology professor who led the s

Will the No Tax on Tips Act bring real relief for servers and bartenders?

Under President Donald Trump’s administration, the Senate unanimously passed the No Tax on Tips Act on May 20, 2025. The legislation would exempt up to $25,000 in tips from federal income tax for eligible workers, with some limitations. To qualify for the tax deduction, workers must have earned less than $160,000 for the 2024-2025 tax year. If the bill becomes a law, this limit will be indexed for inflation.  Bill S.129, introduced by Sen. Ted Cruz in January, creates a federal income tax deduction for workers in occupations that traditionally receive tips. Individuals working as

Georgia's experience raises red flags for Medicaid work requirement moving through Congress

Georgia’s experiment with a work requirement for Medicaid offers a test of a similar mandate Republicans in Congress want to implement nationally, and advocates say the results so far should serve as a warning. Just days shy of its two-year anniversary, the Georgia Medicaid program is providing health coverage to about 7,500 low-income residents, up from 4,300 in the first year, but far fewer than the estimated 240,000 people who could qualify. The state had predicted at least 25,000 enrollees in the first year and nearly 50,000 in the second year. Applicants and

Abrego Garcia’s attorneys still want Trump administration officials held in contempt

Kilmar Abrego Garcia’s attorneys are pushing to keep a civil case against the Trump administration alive so they can seek sanctions against officials for allegedly violating orders to return him from El Salvador, where he was wrongly deported earlier this year. After the government returned Abrego Garcia to the US on Friday to face federal criminal charges in Tennessee, Justice Department attorneys told US District Judge Paula Xinis that she should pause all deadlines in the civil case while they readied a formal request for her to drop the matter entirely.
