Recorded April 1, 2017
The music curriculum at the Los Angeles County High School for the Arts offers all students the opportunity to study music theory (classical and jazz) training from music fundamentals to advanced harmony, perform in large and small ensembles (instrumental and vocal) and study music technology along with film scoring. Each ensemble performs in public concerts three times a year, including the annual Music Gala in February, which features all ensembles. The Opera Workshop presents a musical and grand opera each year. Please see the Performance Calendar for more information.
In Vocal Music, all students participate in Mixed Choir or Concert Choir. In addition to these ensembles, students have the opportunity to audition for Opera Workshop, Vocal Jazz Ensemble and Gospel Choir. First year students take Voice Fundamentals and Sight Singing and Listening.
In Instrumental Music, students participate in Orchestra, Jazz Ensemble, Lab Band, , Brass Ensemble, Percussion Ensemble, String Ensembles, Piano Ensembles, Woodwind Ensembles and Jazz Combos.
In addition to these performance ensembles, each student is required to enroll in music theory each semester. Other non-performance courses include Music Technology, Orchestration, Jazz Improvisation, Reading Ensemble, Listening & Literature and Film Scoring.
Arts High has sent many of its music graduates to the finest colleges, universities and conservatories in the United States, often with scholarships.
