Scientists just solved the mystery of why some streets are deadly hot

Researchers unveiled a digital tool this week to help American cities battle life-threatening heat by pinpointing neighborhoods that lack sufficient shade coverage through shade maps. UCLA’s Luskin Center for Innovation teamed up with American Forests to develop the online resource, which analyzes shade availability in 101 large metropolitan areas covering more than 360 municipalities across the country. The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation funded the mapping initiative. American Forests, which advocates for urban forestry programs nationwide, now hosts the shade map on its Tree Equity

It’s all in the genes! Scientists explain why men are taller than women

Scientists have identified a key genetic factor that helps explain why men are typically five inches taller than women. This difference is attributed to a gene called SHOX that operates differently between the sexes due to variations in chromosome structure. A new study, published on May 19 in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, analyzed genetic data from nearly one million people across three large biobanks in the U.S. and the UK. Researchers found the SHOX gene accounts for approximately one-quarter—or 25%—of the average height difference between men and women.

Judge weighs government's request to unseal records of FBI’s surveillance of Martin Luther King Jr.

A federal judge is weighing a request from the Trump administration to unseal records of the FBI’s surveillance of Martin Luther King Jr. — files that the civil rights leader’s relatives want to keep under wraps in the national archives. U.S. District Judge Richard Leon in Washington, D.C., said during a hearing on Wednesday that he wants to see an inventory of the records before deciding whether the government can review them for possible release to the public. “This is delicate stuff,” Leon said. “We're going to go slowly. Little steps.”

Judge says migrants sent to El Salvador prison must get a chance to challenge their removals

A federal judge ruled on Wednesday that the Trump administration must give more than 100 migrants sent to a notorious prison in El Salvador a chance to challenge their deportations. U.S. District Court Chief Judge James Boasberg said that people who were sent to the prison in March under an 18th-century wartime law haven’t been able to formally contest the removals or allegations that they are members of the Venezuelan gang Tren de Aragua. He ordered the administration to work toward giving them a way to file those challenges. The judge wrote that “significan
